Microsoft is reportedly working on a new artificial intelligence (AI) model known as MAI-1, which is expected to be its largest in-house model so far. Mustafa Suleyman, the head of the AI division, is said to be leading the development of this large language model, with a potential unveiling on the horizon. Notably, Microsoft recently launched their open-source small language model (SLM) Phi-3-mini as a successor to the Phi-2 model.

The MAI-1 AI model is currently in its advanced stages of development, as reported by The Information. However, its purpose has not yet been determined and will depend on its final capabilities. According to unnamed Microsoft employees familiar with the matter, Suleyman is leading the project. There are speculations that the tech giant might showcase the AI model at their annual developer-focused event, Microsoft Build, which is scheduled to begin on May 21.
The MAI-1 AI model reportedly has 500 billion parameters, making it the largest LLM created by the company. By comparison, the Phi-3-mini model had 3.8 billion parameters, while GPT-4 comes with one trillion parameters. A higher number of parameters results in a broader knowledge base for an AI model, enhancing the chatbot’s contextual understanding. As MAI-3 has not been released, there are no benchmark scores available to evaluate its performance against top models.
As per the report, Microsoft decided to develop this AI model internally rather than acquiring it from Inflection AI. Nonetheless, there is a possibility that they leveraged data from the startup for training. It is unclear whether the MAI-1 AI model will be open-sourced like Phi-3-mini, or if users will need to pay a subscription fee for access. Microsoft could also integrate it into its own AI products. More information is likely to be shared at the company’s Build event later this month.
OpenAI is reportedly working on a search engine that utilizes ChatGPT technology. They have already registered a domain and obtained an SSL certificate for their new search product. There are whispers that the search engine might go live on May 9.
